What is Lip Blushing?

We all know that achieving the perfect lip takes a bit of doing. We also know that there are those days when there’s no time to put in that much needed effort. Wouldn’t it be nice if one could just wake up in the morning with Instagram ready lips? The good news is with lip blushing, you can! Read on to learn about how lip blushing can help you look your very best even on those no-makeup days.

Lip blushing is a form of semi-permanent makeup that can add colour and definition to your lips. Unlike lip fillers, lip blushing doesn’t plump your lips up, but it certainly makes them look fuller without changing how they feel.

The soft shaded-in colour makes your lips look healthy, symmetrical, and covers uneven pigmentation or scars – just like your favourite lip tint.

There are several different lip blush colours to choose from, so you can choose the one that you like the most. Remember, since it is semi-permanent you’ll see that colour on your lips whenever you aren’t wearing lipstick so pick one that you are happy to see day in and day out.

How does Lip Blushing Work?

Lip blushing involves using a tiny, mechanised blade to deposit layers of colour into your lips. Your artist keeps adding layers until the desired effect is achieved. Think of it as a semi permanent tattoo for your lips. Although the procedure isn’t as painful as it sounds, your aesthetician will apply a topical anaesthesia to make sure you are a comfortable as possible. You can also take a pain reliever like Tylenol before your appointment. Avoid ibuprofen or aspirin as they are blood thinners.

The procedure is safe provided you always get your lip blushing procedure from a trained and licensed technician.

Your Lip Blushing Consultation

Your lip blushing technician will hold a detailed consultation with you before your appointment to discuss the look you want to achieve. Bring a picture of the lip colour you want (or the product itself) along with you so they can mix the pigments accordingly. They will also map an outline of your lips using a nude or white lipliner so you will see the area that will be ‘blushed in’. This step can also help you see how asymmetry will be corrected.

The appointment itself should take about three hours including the outlining, numbing and tattooing process.

How Long does Lip Blushing Last?

Lip blushing is semi-permanent which means it is designed to fade over time. Lip blushing can last up to two years before you need a touch up. However, there are several factors that can affect its longevity including your lifestyle. Factors like smoking, how often you exfoliate, and the amount of sun exposure can all make your lip blush fade faster.

How to Prepare for Your Lip Blushing Appointment

There are several things you can do to make sure your lip blushing appointment goes as smoothly as possible.

  • If you suffer from cold sores, make sure you see your doctor who will prescribe the right antiviral medication to take for about five days before your appointment.
  • Make sure your lips are smooth and moisturised and ready to accept the colour. Use a homemade exfoliating scrub made of sugar and coconut oil on your lips for a few days before your appointment.
  • If you get lip fillers, you need to get them at least four weeks before your lip blushing appointment.
  • Similarly, do not wax your lips, have a chemical peel or get a fake tan for two weeks before your appointment.
  • Avoid alcohol, especially red wine, for a few days before your appointment along with any blood thinning medication like aspirin, niacin, vitamin W, fish oil, ibuprofen, among others.

Lip Blushing Aftercare

It’s important that you follow your artist’s aftercare instructions carefully while your lips heal. It is natural for your lips to scab for a while after your treatment. Do not pick them off to avoid scarring and loss of pigment in those areas. It can take up to ten days for your lips to heal completely.
