A spray tan can be an instant confidence booster, especially when you’ve had one done by experts. Not only does it make you feel great, but it’s also a quick way to achieve that sun-kissed glow all over without having to spend several hours in the sun.

If you’re worried about your tan looking blotchy or wearing off in no time at all, you’ve come to the right place. There are several things you can do to prep for your tanning appointment. The right prep and aftercare can make your tan last up to 10 days. Read on for our top tips on how you can make the most out of your spray tan.

Prep for your appointment

Your skin needs some prepping before its first spray tan so that it absorbs the tanning solution better and keeps it there.

  1. Hair removal:

If waxing is your hair removal treatment of choice, make sure you have a wax at least 24 hours before your spray tan appointment. This allows for any remnants of wax to be washed off your skin. Waxing also gets rid of dead skin cells so your skin is primed, smooth, and ready for your tan.

If you prefer shaving, no problem, make sure you shave a minimum of 12 hours before your appointment. Shaving after getting a tan can make it look spotty and fade faster.

  1. Paint your nails:

Paint your finger and toenails before your appointment – even a clear polish will do. This prevents your nails from picking up colour during your tan.

  1. Exfoliate thoroughly:

Make sure you exfoliate your skin thoroughly 24 hours before your appointment. Pay special attention to rougher areas like your elbows, knees, ankles, and feet. Exfoliation helps get rid of all your dead skin and cleans out your pores as well as bits of an old tan if you have one. Basically, it makes a new layer of skin ready to take on a new glow.

  1. Don’t moisturize all over

On the day of your appointment, don’t moisturize all over. Apply a fragrance-free lotion the night before, concentrating on parts with thicker skin like your elbows, knees, etc. On the morning of, simply apply a light layer of cream to the rougher areas.

During the appointment

  1. Plan your outfit:

Plan what you’re wearing to the appointment. Wear loose, dark clothing and be prepared to go bra-free for the rest of the day. Wear flipflops. Leave all your jewelry at home. Opt for loose dark underwear or go commando if you’re comfortable with that. Most tanning salons offer disposable underwear to wear during your tan.

  1. Don’t wear makeup:

Ok, this one’s a given. But it needs to be said. Go to your appointment bare-faced. Wear lip balm to protect your lips.

  1. Listen to your technician:

Ask your technician all your questions before getting into the booth and listen to all their instructions. They will be able to guide you on how you can get the best results.

Aftercare:

Your spray tan aftercare is crucial to making your tan last as long as possible.

  1. Avoid water:

Wear your loose clothing and wear flipflops for the rest of the day. Don’t shower or swim for the first 24 hours after getting your tan. Your tan deepens over time so getting it wet will only hamper the process. When you do eventually shower, avoid exfoliating shower gels and loofahs. Dust baby powder all over yourself before going to bed. It can help the spray tan to settle and protect your sheets a bit.

  1. Don’t exercise:

This is your time to Netflix and chill. Avoid doing any activities that will get you hot and sweaty. Sweat will cause streaks on your tan.

  1. Do moisturize:

Your tanning technician will let you know how soon it is safe to moisturize. Avoid oil-based creams and lotions. Use lotions meant for post-spray tan care if possible – your skin will love you for it.

When it’s time to redo your tan – exfoliate and repeat!
